Compensation
and Pension Benefits -
Both Compensation and Pension Benefits are available through the
Department of Veterans Affairs. Compensation
comes to veterans in the form of monthly payments in recognition of the
effects of diseases, disabilities, and injuries (either incurred or
aggravated during active service) that they have undergone.
Compensation is also awarded to surviving spouses, dependent children
and dependent parents in recognition of the economic loss caused by a
veterans death during active service, or discharge from military
service as a result of a service-connected disability.

Pension is awarded to veterans
who have been permanently and totally disabled as a result of an
disability not related to military service. Pension payment comes
to veterans, and dependent spouses, children, and parents on a monthly
basis.
A special time of allowance is given to children of service men and
women who served in the Republic of Vietnam born with spina
bifida. The Spina Bifida
Monthly Allowance is a monthly allowance and falls under
38 U.S.C. 1805, and provides a monthly monetary allowance based on the
degree of the disability of the child.
