Vocational
Rehabilitation & Employment Service -
The Vocational Rehabilitation &
Employment Service benefits offered by the Department of
Veterans Affairs includes a variety of services that can help veterans
obtain employment once their term of service has been completed.
These services include: assistance in finding employment, job
seeking skills training,
on-the-job training and apprenticeships, job development,
self-employment services based on eligibility, vocational training,
1-year certification programs, 2-year diploma programs, and 2 and 4
year post secondary training programs.

Eligibility for one of these
programs is based on the veterans eligibility for one of the following
programs: the Montgomery GI Bill, the Veterans Education
Assistance Program - VEAP, the Dependents
Education Assistance Program (for certain spouses and dependent
children), the Spina Bifida Program (for certain dependent
children), the Reservists Education Program, and Public Law
102-16 (for Transitioning Servicemembers). Assistance into the
services provided by the VA, may include interest and aptitude testing
as well as occupation exploration, and goal setting. A must for eligibility is
that in order to receive services or be Entitled, under Chapter 31,
Vocational Rehabilitation, a veteran must be determined to have an
employment handicap or serious employment handicap
After a veteran has been accepted to get help through the VR&E, the
veteran will work with a counselor to determine all viable employment
options for that veteran. The counselor will also help the
veteran narrow vocational options to define a career goal for the
veteran and a vocational plan to achieve that goal. In looking
for employment for the veteran, the counselor will determine labor
market information and wage information, investigate training
requirements and identify the physical demands of jobs that are
available. The counselor will work with the veteran to determine
the best employment possibilities for the veteran in the job
market.
If a veteran is found to not be eligible for assistance through the
VR&E, a VA Counselor will help them identify other options, goals,
and programs that may help the veteran find employment. The
counselor may refer the veteran to any State Vocational Rehabilitation
programs that may be available, inform them of financial aid
possibilities, or refer them to the Department of Labor's DVOP
program.
